CAGC offers membership options for practising and non-practising genetic counsellors, genetic nurses, genetic counselling students, and other professionals with an interest in genetic counselling.

Which membership is right for you?
Full members
This membership category is open to individuals who:
- Have a diploma, Master’s degree, or PhD from a genetic counselling program
Certification by the Canadian Board of Genetic Counselling (CBGC) is not required for this membership category.
Members in this category may vote, serve on the CAGC Board of Directors, and serve as committee chairs.
Full Member - New Grads
Graduates of an MSc genetic counselling training program who apply for Full membership within two years of graduation are eligible for a one-time discount on their Full membership fee.
For example, if you graduated on December 15, 2024, you may apply for the Full membership discount until December 15, 2026. Applications submitted after December 15, 2026 will be charged the regular Full membership fee.
Certification by the Canadian Board of Genetic Counselling (CBGC) is not required for this membership category.
Members in this category may vote, serve on the CAGC Board of Directors, and serve as committee chairs.
The New Graduate Discount may only be used once. If you have already used this discount, you will be required to pay the regular Full membership fee in future membership years.
Associate members
Associate membership is open to individuals with an interest in genetic counselling who are not eligible for, or do not wish to apply for, Full or Student membership.
This category may include physicians, other healthcare providers, researchers, educators, or professionals whose work is connected to genetic counselling.
Associate members may not vote, serve on the CAGC Board of Directors, or serve as committee chairs.
Student members
Student membership is open to individuals who are enrolled in, and actively completing coursework as part of, an MSc genetic counselling training program.
This category is also open to Full or Associate members who return to school full-time to pursue additional education, provided they are active students at the time of membership renewal.
Student members may not vote or serve as committee chairs.
Emeritus members
Emeritus membership is open to individuals who have paid Full CAGC membership dues for a minimum of ten years. These years do not need to be consecutive.
To be eligible, applicants must no longer be employed as genetic counsellors.
Emeritus members may not vote, serve on the CAGC Board of Directors, or serve as committee chairs.
